Gas prices climb in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices are creeping up in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, according to AAA Northeast.

Gas price rose 5 cents from last week in Rhode Island, marking the second consecutive week of increases, AAA Northeast said.

Self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $2.79 per gallon. Locally, prices are 13 cents higher than a month ago, but 2 cents less than the national average. A year ago, Rhode Island’s average price was 92 cents higher at $3.71.

Prices for other grades of gasoline are as follows: midgrade unleaded, $2.99; premium unleaded, $3.14; and diesel, $2.97.

In Massachusetts, gasoline prices rose 6 cents from last week, AAA Northeast said, with self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $2.73 per gallon. Massachusetts prices are 9 cents higher than a month ago, but 8 cents less than the national average. Massachusetts’ average price was 92 cents higher a year ago at $3.65.

Prices for other grades of gasoline are as follows: midgrade unleaded, $2.93; premium unleaded, $3.08; and diesel, $2.99.

AAA offered the following fuel-saving tip: Don’t top off your gas tank completely. In warm weather, fuel can expand and overflow.
