Gas prices continue to plunge in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices plunged again in Rhode Island and Massachusetts this past week due to falling oil prices, 11 cents and 10 cents, respectively, AAA Southern New England said on Monday.

In Rhode Island, self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline averaged $2.76 per gallon, an 11-cent decrease from last week. Prices locally are 23 cents lower than a month ago, but are 20 cents more than the national unleaded gasoline average price of $2.56.

A year ago, Rhode Island’s average gasoline price was 76 cents higher at $3.52.

Prices in Rhode Island range from $2.59 to $2.89. Average per-gallon prices for different grades of self-serve gas ranged from $3.05 for midgrade unleaded to $3.21 for premium unleaded and $3.37 for diesel.

In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $2.69 per gallon, down 10 cents from last week. Locally, prices are 25 cents lower than a month ago, but 13 cents more than the national average.

Last year, the Massachusetts average price was 75 cents higher at $3.44.

Prices in Massachusetts range from $2.48 to $3.09, with midgrade unleaded at $2.96, premium unleaded at $3.10 and diesel at $3.38.

AAA offered the following fuel-saving tip: Check the air and fuel filters at least twice a year, as dirty filters increase fuel consumption and can cause poor performance.
