Gas prices decline in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in Rhode Island continue to drop, marking the lowest point this year, according to AAA Southern New England’s weekly survey of gasoline prices.
The price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline averaged $3.42 per gallon, 2 cents less than last week. Locally, prices are 11 cents lower than a month ago, but 8 cents higher than the national average of regular unleaded at $3.34. Also, a year ago at this time, Rhode Island’s average price was 18 cents higher at $3.60.
Prices for unleaded regular range from $3.29 to $3.64, according to the survey.
Average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.66 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.78 for premium unleaded and $3.82 for diesel.
In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline prices dropped a penny from last week to $3.39 a gallon. Locally, prices are 6 cents lower than a month ago, but 5 cents more than the national average. A year ago at this time, Massachusetts’ average price was 9 cents higher.
In Massachusetts, the price range for unleaded regular is $3.21 to $3.69. Average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.62 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.76 for premium unleaded and $3.82 for diesel.
AAA’s fuel saving tip of the week is: lighten the load. A heavier vehicle uses more gas, so remove unnecessary weight in the passenger compartment, trunk or cargo area.
