PROVIDENCE – As concerns about the impact of unrest in Iraq on the country’s oil production have abated, gas prices dropped another 4 cents this week in Rhode Island and fell 5 cents in Massachusetts, according to the weekly survey by AAA Southern New England.

A gallon of self-serve, unleaded regular gas in Rhode Island averaged $3.69 in the July 21 survey, 4 cents lower than the price a week ago. Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, the average price for self-serve, unleaded regular was 5 cents lower at $3.63 per gallon.

In Rhode Island, the average price this week was 5 cents lower than the average a month ago, while in Massachusetts, prices were 6 cents higher than last month. A year ago, the same gas cost $3.80 per gallon in Rhode Island and $3.71 per gallon in Massachusetts.

Self-serve, unleaded regular varied in price from $3.44 to $3.88 across the Ocean State in the survey. The average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.88 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.99 for premium unleaded and $3.97 for diesel.

Self-serve, unleaded regular ranged in price across Massachusetts from $3.46 to $3.90 per gallon. Mid-grade unleaded averaged $3.80 this week, while premium unleaded cost an average of $3.92 per gallon, and diesel posted an average price of $3.95 per gallon.

The national average price for a gallon of unleaded regular dropped 4 cents this week to $3.57, 12 cents lower than the Rhode Island average and 6 cents lower than Massachusetts’ average.
