Gas prices drop in R.I., Mass., closing in on national average

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices continued to drop in Rhode Island and Massachusetts this week, while the national average held steady, according to the weekly survey by AAA Southern New England.

A gallon of self-serve, unleaded regular gas averaged $3.48 in Rhode Island in the Oct. 15 survey, 6 cents less than the price a week ago.

In Massachusetts, the average price for self-serve, unleaded regular gas this week was $3.39 per gallon, down a nickel over last week.

Rhode Island’s average price comes in 22 cents lower than the average a month ago, while in Massachusetts, local gas prices are 20 cents cheaper than last month’s. A year ago, the same gas cost $3.94 per gallon in Rhode Island and $3.83 per gallon in Massachusetts.

Self-serve, unleaded regular varied in price from $3.36 to $3.76 across the Ocean State in the survey. The average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.74 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.86 for premium unleaded to $3.97 for diesel.

Self-serve, unleaded regular ranged in price across Massachusetts from $3.27 to $3.56 per gallon. Mid-grade unleaded averaged $3.60 this week, while premium unleaded cost an average of $3.73 per gallon and diesel posted an average price of $3.92 per gallon.

National gas prices held at last week’s average of $3.34 for a gallon of unleaded regular, only 5 cents lower than the Massachusetts average of $3.39 per gallon and 14 cents lower than Rhode Island’s $3.48 average.
