Gas prices fluctuate in R.I., rising 2 cents; Mass. holds steady

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices climbed back up again in Rhode Island this week, reflecting volatility in national gas prices, while the Massachusetts average remained unchanged from a week ago, according to the weekly survey by AAA Southern New England.

A gallon of self-serve, unleaded regular gas averaged $3.71 in Rhode Island in the June 16 survey, rising 2 cents compared with the price a week ago. Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, the average price for self-serve, unleaded regular matched last week’s at $3.65 per gallon.

The average price in Rhode Island came in a penny higher than the average a month ago, while in Massachusetts, prices were a penny lower than last month’s average. A year ago, the same gas cost $3.59 per gallon in Rhode Island and $3.50 per gallon in Massachusetts.

Self-serve, unleaded regular varied in price from $3.55 to $3.86 across the Ocean State in the survey. The average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.91 for mid-grade unleaded to $4.01 for both premium unleaded and diesel.

Self-serve, unleaded regular ranged in price across Massachusetts from $3.50 to $3.90 per gallon. Mid-grade unleaded averaged $3.82 this week, while premium unleaded cost an average of $3.95 per gallon, and diesel posted an average price of $4.00 per gallon.

The national average price for a gallon of unleaded regular rose 1 cent this week to $3.66, 1 cent higher than the Massachusetts average and 5 cents lower than Rhode Island’s average.
