PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in Rhode Island are unchanged from last week, and are still hovering at lows last seen in 2004, according to AAA Northeast.
AAA’s Aug. 15 survey of prices in Rhode Island found that self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.14 per gallon – 1 cent above the national average of $2.13. A year ago at this time, the average price in Rhode Island was 42 cents higher at $2.56.
“Mid-summer prices haven’t been this low since 2004,” Lloyd P. Albert, AAA Northeast senior vice president of public and government affairs, said in a statement. “That’s great news for families planning road trips before the start of the new school year.”
Prices for unleaded regular range from $1.94 to $2.28, with midgrade unleaded at $2.40; premium unleaded at $2.63; and diesel at $2.32.
In Massachusetts, the price of self-serve, regular unleaded fell 1 cent to $2.05 per gallon, which is 9 cents below the national average.
A year ago at this time, the average price in Massachusetts was 44 cents higher at $2.49. Prices in the Bay State range from $1.89 to $2.49 for unleaded regular, with midgrade unleaded at $2.37; premium unleaded at $2.57; and diesel, $2.45.

“For travelers who are planning an August vacation or a last-gasp-of-summer day trip, gas prices inching ever closer to the $2 mark are a gift!” Mary Maguire, director of public and legislative affairs for AAA Northeast, said.
