Gas prices in R.I., Mass., reach lowest point since January 2009

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices fell 5 cents this week in Rhode Island and 4 cents in Massachusetts, hitting the lowest point in both states since January 2009, AAA Northeast said.
AAA said Rhode Island gas prices have fallen for 10 consecutive weeks, and that self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $1.83 per gallon. Rhode Island’s gasoline price is 8 cents higher than the national average of $1.75. A year ago, the average price in Rhode Island was 37 cents higher at $2.20.
“The strong global and domestic supply of crude oil and gasoline continues to keep prices low at the pump,” Lloyd P. Albert, AAA Northeast senior vice president of public and government affairs, said in a statement. “Last year at this time, prices had started to rise due to the oil refineries slowing production to switch over to summer blends of gasoline. We’ll be watching closely to see if that happens again this year.”
Prices range from $1.71 to $1.94, with midgrade unleaded at $2.25; premium unleaded, $2.33; and diesel, $2.04.
In Massachusetts, prices have fallen for the ninth consecutive week, with self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $1.78 per gallon. A year ago at this time, the average price in Massachusetts was 40 cents higher at $2.18.
Prices in the Bay State range from $1.61 to $1.94, with midgrade unleaded at $2.14; premium unleaded at $2.30; and diesel, $2.12.
