Gas prices jump in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices this week jumped 11 cents in Rhode Island and 8 cents in Massachusetts, according to AAA Northeast.
“High fuel demand, declining refinery production and rising oil costs have pushed prices higher,” Lloyd Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast, said in a statement.
Self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in the Ocean State is averaging $2.16 per gallon, 11 cents more than last week. Rhode Island’s price is 4 cents higher than the national average for regular unleaded of $2.12. A year ago at this time, Rhode Island’s average price was 32 cents higher at $2.48.
Prices range from $2.05 to $2.25. Other grades of gasoline are as follows: midgrade unleaded, $2.42; premium unleaded, $2.60; and diesel, $2.21.
In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.09 per gallon. The Massachusetts price is 3 cents below the national average for regular unleaded. A year ago, the average price in Massachusetts was 38 cents higher at $2.47.
Prices in the Bay State range from $1.91 to $2.29, with midgrade unleaded at $2.32; premium unleaded at $2.50; and diesel, $2.19.
