Gas prices on the rise in R.I. again after two weeks of declines

PROVIDENCE – The average price of gasoline rose a penny in Rhode Island and was unchanged in Massachusetts this week, reversing two weeks of price declines in both states, according to the weekly survey by AAA Southern New England.

A gallon of self-serve, unleaded regular gas averaged $3.71 in Rhode Island in the May 27 survey, an increase of 1 cent over the price a week ago. Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, the average price for self-serve, unleaded regular matched last week’s at $3.66 per gallon.

Rhode Island’s average price came in a penny lower than the average a month ago, while in Massachusetts, local gas prices were 3 cents below last month’s. A year ago, the same gas cost $3.59 per gallon in Rhode Island and $3.51 per gallon in Massachusetts.

Self-serve, unleaded regular varied in price from $3.64 to $3.86 across the Ocean State in the survey. The average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.92 for mid-grade unleaded to $4.01 for premium unleaded to $4.03 for diesel.

Self-serve, unleaded regular ranged in price across Massachusetts from $3.54 to $3.80 per gallon. Mid-grade unleaded averaged $3.85 this week, while premium unleaded cost an average of $3.98 per gallon, and diesel posted an average price of $4.05 per gallon.

The national average price for a gallon of unleaded regular also remained unchanged this week at $3.65, 1 cent lower than the Massachusetts average and 5 cents lower than Rhode Island’s average.
