Gas up 6 cents across R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island and Massachusetts drivers saw gasoline prices rise 6 cents this week after a nine-week decline, AAA Southern New England reported Monday.

The cost of self-serve, unleaded regular averaged $3.55 per gallon in Rhode Island – 5 cents higher than last week yet still 14 cents lower the course of May – according to the auto club’s Monday survey of local gas prices.

The national self-serve, unleaded regular average remains 3 cents higher than the Rhode Island price, at $3.58 per gallon.

Ocean State drivers can find gas priced low as $3.44 or as high as $3.69 per gallon this week – minding the 25 cent gap, AAA encouraged drivers to shop around for the best local offering.

Rhode Island gas prices averaged 29 cents higher on the same week in 2012 at $3.84 per self-serve, unleaded gallon, according to AAA.

Diesel customers in Rhode Island can expect average prices of $3.99 per gallon.

Massachusetts saw an equal 6 cent jump in regular gas prices compared with last week, averaging $3.48 per gallon, 10 cents below the national average and 7 cents below Rhode Island’s average. Local prices are up 1 cent over the past month.

Gas prices in Massachusetts averaged 23 cents higher on the same week in 2012 at $3.71 per self-serve, unleaded gallon. Locally, drivers can find prices as low as $3.35 or as high as $3.69 per gallon of regular gas.

Diesel customers in Massachusetts can expect averages prices of $3.94 per gallon.

Nationally, the average cost for self-serve, regular gas has risen 7 cents over the past two weeks from $3.51 to $3.58. Summer gas prices are expected to average $3.63 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The average regular price reached its highest point at the apex of the Great Recession – $4.11 per gallon – on July 17, 2008.
