PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices rose 2 cents in Rhode Island, ending five consecutive weeks of declines, while prices in Massachusetts held steady, according to the weekly survey by AAA Southern New England.

A gallon of self-serve, unleaded regular gas averaged $3.50 in Rhode Island in the Oct. 21 survey, 2 cents more than the price a week ago.

In Massachusetts, the average price for self-serve, unleaded regular gas this week was $3.39 per gallon, unchanged from last week’s average.

“We’ve seen prices fall significantly in the last six weeks, but the most dramatic price drops took place in the first month of the decline,” said Mary Maguire, director of public and legislative affairs for AAA, in a release.

Local gas prices in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts are 15 cents lower than the average a month ago. A year ago, the same gas cost $3.88 per gallon in Rhode Island and $3.76 per gallon in Massachusetts.

Self-serve, unleaded regular varied in price from $3.40 to $3.64 across the Ocean State in the survey. The average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.73 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.86 for premium unleaded to $3.96 for diesel.

Self-serve, unleaded regular ranged in price across Massachusetts from $3.26 to $3.70 per gallon. Mid-grade unleaded averaged $3.61 this week, while premium unleaded cost an average of $3.73 per gallon and diesel posted an average price of $3.93 per gallon.

National gas prices rose 1 cent this week to $3.35 for a gallon of unleaded regular, 4 cents less than the Massachusetts average of $3.39 per gallon and 15 cents less than Rhode Island’s $3.50 average.
