PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in Rhode Island and Massachusetts continue to fall, AAA Northeast said Monday.

AAA’s Jan. 11 price survey found that self-serve, regular unleaded in Rhode Island is averaging $2 per gallon, 2 cents lower than last week, while the same grade of gasoline in Massachusetts is averaging $1.96 per gallon, 1 cent lower than last week.

AAA Northeast said Rhode Island’s price is 3 cents above the national average for regular unleaded of $1.97. A year ago at this time, the average price in Rhode Island was 31 cents higher at $2.31.
Prices for unleaded regular in the Ocean State range from $1.87 to $2.09, with midgrade unleaded at $2.34; premium unleaded, $2.46; and diesel, $2.23.

In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded was 30 cents higher a year ago at this time, and prices are ranging from $1.79 to $2.19. Midgrade unleaded averaged $2.31 per gallon, premium unleaded, $2.50, and diesel, $2.31.
“Historically, we see demand for gasoline hit its lowest point in January. That factor, combined with falling crude oil prices and an abundant domestic supply, continues to drive down prices at the pump,” Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast’s director of public/legislative affairs, said in a statement.
AAA offered the following fuel-saving tip: If a vehicle’s engine does not need premium fuel, using anything other than regular is a waste of money.
