GateHouse Media, the owner of the Providence Journal, this week said that it plans to hire up to 100 digital-only sales executives to serve more than 200,000 business customers across the country.
The Pittsford, N.Y.-based company said approximately 10 of the new hires will be in the New England area initially, but more are expected, the Boston Business Journal reported.
The news comes just a few months after the company, which is owned by New Media Investment Group, offered buyouts and also laid off employees in the New England area.
GateHouse said the company will begin “targeting national advertisers seeking digital solutions at scale in a trusted editorial environment.”
A publisher of more than 525 local news websites and more than 600 local community publications, Gatehouse noted that it has redesigned more than 500 websites in its portfolio over the past six months, and that the redesign has led to a 100 percent increase in ad viewability.

“GateHouse has many longstanding print advertising partners who, for the first time, are looking to us as a digital partner to reach our 40 million online readers,” Peter Newton, GateHouse chief revenue officer, said in a statement.

The digital sales executives will work with more than 1,000 GateHouse sales executives.
Gatehouse said the digital sales team also will offer small- and medium-sized businesses the services of Propel Marketing, based in Quincy, Mass.
