General Dynamics building completed

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Construction of a new 150,000-square-foot submarine manufacturing building, known as Bay 4, has been completed at the General Dynamics Electric Boat plant at Quonset Point, contractor Dimeo Construction announced this week.
The new heavy-industrial building, located between two other buildings at Electric Boat, will be used to build deck modules for Virginia class nuclear submarines. It contains two freight elevators and four overhead cranes, including two with a 120-ton lift capacity.
The building was designed by Ware Malcomb.
“With the aggressive schedule requirements, relocation and removal of existing underground utilities while maintaining service to other buildings, and the constrained site challenges of erecting a large building between two existing buildings with less than one foot clearance, it is a testament to the team effort that this project was such a success.” said Dimeo Senior Project Manager John LaRose in a news release.
The project employed a single crane structural steel pick weighing 268 tons, the largest in Rhode Island history.
