WASHINGTON – Kali St. Marie Thomas, of Brown University and the Providence VA Medical Center, has been named the 2016 recipient of the Carroll L. Estes Rising Star Award, according to The Gerontological Society of America. Thomas will receive the award at GSA’s 2016 annual Scientific Meeting, which will be held in New Orleans in November.

An assistant professor in the department of health services, policy and practice at Brown University, Thomas is also a research health science specialist at the Providence VA Medical Center’s Center of Innovation for Long-term Services and Supports. She received her doctorate in aging studies from the University of South Florida and completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at Brown’s Center for Gerontology and Healthcare Research that was funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Her research focuses on identifying ways to improve the quality of life of older and disabled adults who need long-term services and supports. With funding from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Institute on Aging and foundations, Thomas has headed research projects evaluating the quality of care delivered in long-term care facilities and how home- and community-based services might prevent or delay nursing home placement.

This honor is given annually by GSA’s Social Research, Policy and Practice Section to a member who has made significant contributions in social research, policy and practice early in his or her career. Established in 2009, the award recognizes Carroll L. Estes, a distinguished gerontology researcher, an advocate for older people, a former SRPP section chair and a former GSA president.
