Gilder Foundation gifts $2M to Wheeler

The Gilder Foundation of New York recently made a $2 million gift to the Gilder Center for the Arts at the Wheeler School, which led to the formal naming of the complex in late October.
Wheeler Head Dan Miller announced the naming of the center at a dedication ceremony.
“The Foundation was drawn to the private-public partnership made possible by the state-of-the-art venue that will serve not only the Wheeler community but be made available to cultural organizations throughout the state,” Miller said.
The $13 million building and furnishing of the Center for the Arts, which faces Angell Street in Providence, constitutes the largest campus project at Wheeler since 1964.
A 400-seat auditorium forms the centerpiece of the new arts complex, which also includes five performing arts classrooms; four practice rooms; a 175-seat black-box theater with flexibly-arranged seating; a “green room,” costume storage and set shop; renovated arts studios, and a digital photography lab.
Ann Beha Architects designed the complex, and general contractor dck worldwide managed construction.
Gifts to the school’s “Campaign for the 125th,” celebrating Wheeler’s 125th anniversary as a school this year, funded the project.
The Gilder Center for the Arts will serve as a venue for community groups as well as the Wheeler community, including the Association of Independent Schools of New England’s Middle School Diversity Conference on Nov. 15. It also will serve as a host site for the Providence Children’s Film Festival in February.
