TAUNTON – The Mashpee Wampanoag’s “First Light” $500 million casino project is running into difficulty, The Boston Globe is reporting.
The project, according to the article, is running into resistance from an anticasino group who enlisted local landowners to challenge the federal decision that awarded land to the tribe, and another tribe, the Pocasset Pokanoket, that is attempting to claim the land.
The Mashpee Wampanoags spent $35 million on the East Taunton land.
Mashpee Chairman Cedric Cromwell said Wampanoags have always lived in and around Taunton.
“They are our ancestors and that gives us a direct tie to the land,” he told the Globe.
The Taunton site also is near two existing casinos, Plainridge Park in Plainville and Twin River in Lincoln.
