Gloor wins marketing award

MICHAEL GLOOR, owner of Gloor Design, recently won the Marc Harrison Award for Marketing Excellence at the 21st Annual New England Fine Furnishings Show. Judges selected Gloor Design for its bright, inviting booth space.

Marc Harrison was a firm believer that the New England Fine Furnishings Show should not only be about showcasing work, but also how the work is showcased. How do you ensure an inviting booth space that draws people in and highlights your work?

The booth is a backdrop for my work and signage – it has evolved into light, natural wood walls, which complement the tones of my pieces and is warm and inviting. Clean, simple and minimal – visual overload is not appealing.

Why is marketing and branding an important aspect of what you do?

My pieces are one of a kind. … Having a set logo allows me to be recognized even as my designs evolve and change.

What advice would you give to small-business owners who aren’t sure where to start when it comes to marketing?

Pay a good graphic designer to help develop a visual presentation, a logo, website and signage. Exhibit at local shows such as the Fine Furnishings Show – this helps to make contacts in your local area; word of mouth is extremely valuable.

You studied to be a scientist in college. Was it difficult for you to switch up your career path, or was it an easy decision to follow your passion?

It was easy to make the change. I was young and impulsive, but the creative path has been difficult. In hindsight, I would’ve given more attention to marketing myself well earlier. •
