NEWPORT – Captain Howard Goldman has been relieved of duty as commanding officer of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Newport Division.

Rear Admiral Moises DelToro III, commander of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, relieved Goldman of duty on Wednesday due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command.

The decision was based on findings of an investigation into a hostile work environment and poor command climate, according to a news release from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center.

Goldman has been reassigned to Naval Station Newport. Details about his position were not immediately available.
NUWC Spokesman David Sanders said there will be no further disciplinary action. Sanders said the investigation lasted approximately one month and was launched after a few instances of workplace complaints, declining to be specific. He said DelToro initiated the investigation.

Captain Geoffrey G. deBeauclair, chief of staff for commander, Naval Undersea Warfare Center, has temporarily assumed command of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Newport Division until a permanent relief is assigned, the release stated.
The NavyTimes reported that Goldman accepted responsibility when reached by telephone.
“Command in the Navy is all about responsibility and accountability,” Goldman told the NavyTimes. “I was responsible to lead NUWC Division Newport and that leadership did not meet standards. I was held accountable. I accept that decision.”

Imagine a world where everyone in authority accepted responsibility for his (or her) failings?
