Grand opening for $6M Amos House building slated for Friday

(Updated 11:17 a.m.)
PROVIDENCE- A ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony for Amos House’s new $6 million building will take place on Friday at 9 a.m. followed by a tour of the facilities at 460 Pine St.

Amos House began construction of its new four-story, 29,000-square-foot community center on Dec. 1, 2014.

The new space allows Amos House to continue to provide free breakfast and lunch meals, transitional and permanent supportive housing, job and literacy training, as well as substance abuse counseling and emergency assistance, on a larger scale. The company will continue to provide support for men, women, and children in Rhode Island who are hungry, homeless and in crisis, as it has done for more than 40 years.

The new building is directly behind the current soup kitchen. Highlights of the new building include a new soup kitchen with a larger dining hall, classrooms, community rooms, training centers and office space for staff. A larger community center means that up to 20 percent more people will be seated per meal, 50 percent more students will be accepted into the carpentry and culinary training programs, and staff offices will be consolidated from three buildings to one. The old building will now be free to create more housing opportunities.

Funding for the project was made possible by a 2010 Federal Earmark of $730,000, a $1 million forgiveable loan from Rhode Island Housing and $3 million in gifts and pledges from local businesses, foundations, and individuals bridged by a loan from Boston Community Capital. All credits were allotted by Massachusetts Housing Investment Corp. and invested by Bank of America.

Ahlborg Construction Corp. was the project manager for the new building, designed by David Presbrey Architects.

Supporters of Amos House will be present at the ribbon cutting ceremony, including U.S. Sen. Jack F. Reed and U.S. Rep. David N. Cicilline.

Eileen Hayes, president and CEO of Amos House, Reed, Cicilline and other dignitaries are scheduled to speak.
