Granite Block to be largest N.E. data center

Posted 6/8/11

FALL RIVER – Once the renovation at the Granite Block Global Data Center is completed – slated for within two months – it will be the largest of its kind in New England, The Herald News reported.

The 163,000-square-foot data center will provide application hosting and disaster recovery services.

It will employ between 60 to 80 people, including: technicians, sales associates, security personnel and maintenance employees.

Last month, two 2-megawatts generators, costing about $500,000 each, were put in place to guarantee uninterrupted power supply at the facility.

Granite’s president noted that the data center should attract visitors to Fall Rivers; a similar, 40,000-square-foot data center in Boston brings 500 to 700 visitors monthly, he said to the newspaper.

Certainly other DCs in NE larger than this one. The Markley Group DC in Boston is a 40MW facility with about 1Million SF of DC space. Also I am a little skeptical of a DC as a visitor attraction. In fact DC usually try to have a low profile for security purposes.
