LINCOLN – Granite Telecommunications LLC has donated $4,322 to the Gary “Cooter” Hopkins Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund after employees participated in Jeans Days.
The contribution was presented at the Scholarship Fund’s 5th Annual Another Shot Hockey Night featuring Boston Bruins alumni on March 29. The fund provides educational scholarships to students from Burrillville High School.
Established in 2009 following the loss of Gary Hopkins Jr., the fund memorializes him and supports students who share his passion for hockey.
Money was raised through Jeans Days, held every Friday, when Granite employees who wear business casual attire or jeans donate $3 each to selected charities. Each week, the Granite Cares Committee chooses a qualifying nonprofit organization nominated by other employees. Granite then matches the amount raised by employees.
Tara Smith, sister of Gary Hopkins Jr. and president of the fund, thanked Granite, a provider of communications solutions to businesses.
“On behalf of my family, we express our deepest appreciation to Granite for participating in the fundraiser,” Smith said. “To say that this incredibly generous donation far exceeded our expectations would be an understatement. We are positively overwhelmed by this wonderful group of people whose support will allow us to help student athletes as they strive for excellence in their continued education.”
Granite employs more than 1,150 people in Quincy, Mass., where headquarters are located, and at offices in Atlanta, Miami, New York and Providence.
