PROVIDENCE – Groundwork Providence, a nonprofit that works to revitalize neighborhoods through development of green space, has been named the 2013 Champion in Action for strengthening communities by Citizens Bank and WJAR-TV NBC 10.

Groundwork Providence will receive a $35,000 unrestricted grant, media coverage, and promotional and volunteer support in recognition of its job-training social venture program Groundcorps, summer youth program Green Teams, and remediation of urban space to promote environmental stewardship.

“We are thrilled to be selected as a Champion in Action,” said Gary Cloutier, executive director of Groundwork Providence, in a statement. “This award will help us continue our mission of changing lives, greening neighborhoods, and cultivating pride and a sense of place for Rhode Islanders.”

Champions in Action is a joint initiative of Citizens Bank and NBC 10 launched in 2002 to recognize and support nonprofit organizations. The program has awarded 40 nonprofits more than $1 million in grants and promotional support in Rhode Island.

Applications for the 2013 Champions in Action arts and culture award are due March 8 and the winner will be announced in July.

Groundwork Providence was founded in 1983 as Keep Providence Beautiful. The nonprofit joined the Groundwork USA network in 2000. The grant will be used to complete an eco-laboratory and teaching facility at the organization’s community garden and to for job skill building through teaching and educational programs for trainees, students and residents.
