Group changes name to Animal Rescue R.I.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The Animal Rescue League of Southern Rhode Island has changed its name to Animal Rescue Rhode Island, effective today, based on an expanded mission and service area.
The name change and redesigned logo were to be unveiled in a ceremony to be held at the organization’s new shelter at 506B Curtis Corner Road, Peace Dale, today at 10:30 a.m. On Saturday, a ribbon “chewing” ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. to officially open the shelter.
“Ours is a bigger mission as we draw geographically from not only southern Rhode Island, but from all over the state as well as the northeast United States,” said Douglas J. Rubinstein, president of the nonprofit’s board of directors.
The same care and compassion associated with the organization, founded in 1938, will remain, Rubinstein added.
“Our roots in southern Rhode Island means our heart remains firmly here as we expand our center to not only care for more local animals in need but to expand our reach in helping to include rescued animals from our state and beyond who we believe have an inherent value to society,” he said.
The new shelter provides a modern, welcoming facility for abandoned, abused and surrendered homeless animals, and features a canine academy to train, comfort and rescue dogs, and facilities for humane education programs and other animal welfare activities.
One of the feature programs, “All About Animals,” was made possible by a $15,000 donation from the Champlin family, owners of the Critter Hut retail store in Wakefield.
“Our new shelter will enable us to advocate for more animals, and save more animals now and in the future,” Rubinstein said.
A weekendlong grand opening celebration is planned featuring tours of the shelter, encounters with animals, face painting, and other activities.
