EAST PROVIDENCE – Gurnet Consulting recently won an excellence in project management award from Ocean State Project Management Institute for its involvement with the Wireless Classroom Initiative.
The project, sponsored by the state Department of Education, was managed by Gurnet, a provider of strategy development and project execution services.
“We were very happy and very proud of it,” Martin J. King, Gurnet CEO, said about the award in a telephone interview. “The project itself was such a noble cause.”
King explained that his company’s role was to manage various vendors associated with the $20 million Wireless Classroom Initiative, 18 in total. Vendors were selected by school departments involved with the project, which is expected to be completed by June.
Three years ago, when the project began, less than 23 percent of Rhode Island’s classrooms had any kind of wireless network access. Now, more than 98 percent of public school classrooms have wireless access. The project involved more than 350 schools in 57 districts and was finished on schedule and 15 percent under budget, according to information from Gurnet.
“Highly complex projects like this one require adept management of multiple stakeholders, effective communications, and talented project leaders,” Shepperd Luce, Ocean State Project Management Institute president, said in a statement. “Gurnet Consulting successfully executed a mission-critical initiative that drastically improved Rhode Island’s educational landscape.”
Luce said his organization is “honored” to name Gurnet the 2015 OSPMI Recognition for Excellence in Project Management Award winner. Projects eligible for the award must demonstrate superior performance in project management practices, exceptional organizational results, and a positive impact on society, according to information provided by Gurnet.
“The Wireless Classroom Initiative has laid the foundation for future generations of Rhode Islanders to compete in the global economy,” King said. “This was a fantastic opportunity to work with great people, on a great project, for a great cause. Special thanks go to our project team and RIDE colleagues. We are deeply honored to receive this award. ”
