PROVIDENCE – HealthSource RI has released its latest enrollment data for the week ending Dec. 31, showing a 2 percent increase from the previous week.

Individual and family enrollments grew to 29,892 from 29,312, HealthSource RI said Wednesday. The majority of the individuals are 2016 HSRI enrollees who were auto-renewed into a 2017 plan, HSRI said.

In addition, 3,322 of the 29,892 individuals have selected a plan for 2017 coverage, and are new to the state exchange this year or returning after being enrolled with HSRI at some point prior.

HSRI also said that 22,033 of the 29,892 individuals have paid their first month’s premium.

A year ago at this time the health insurance exchange reported that 34,627 people had enrolled in a health plan, with 27,124 of them having paid the first month’s premium. Total enrollment is 13.7 percent below what it was through Jan. 2, 2016, while the number of people who had paid their first month’s premium represented a decline of 18.8 percent.

Females comprise the majority of enrollees at 53 percent, while males comprise 47 percent.

Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island also has moved ahead of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island regarding enrollments, capturing 51 percent to BCBSRI’s 49 percent. Most enrollees – 69 percent – are signing up for silver plans with their insurance carrier.

Twenty-two percent of enrollees are not receiving any financial assistance, while 26 percent are receiving advanced premium tax credits and 52 percent are receiving an advanced premium tax credit and cost-sharing reduction to offset out-of-pocket expenses such as co-pays and deductibles.

Open enrollment for individuals began Nov. 1 and ends Jan. 31.

Small employers may enroll at their renewal date, regardless of where that date falls in the calendar year.

Medicaid-eligible individuals also may enroll throughout the year.

As of Dec. 31, 2,484 small employer accounts have been created, and 1,009 small employer applications were completed.
