HSRI: Enrollments top 35K

PROVIDENCE – HealthSource RI said that 35,428 individuals are enrolled in 2016 coverage through the health benefits exchange as of Feb. 6, the majority of whom were auto-renewed into a 2016 plan.
That is 758 more than what was reported last week for enrollments.
The latest enrollment number reflects those who have paid and those who have not.
Open enrollment technically ended Jan. 31. Customers who enrolled by Jan. 31 for March 1 coverage have until Feb. 23 to make their first payment.

HSRI spokeswoman Maria Tocco added that some customers were eligible for a special enrollment period that ran through Feb. 8 because they were not able to reach the contact center when phone lines went down on Jan. 21. Those customers also have until Feb. 23 to make their first month’s payment, she said.
Even after the Feb. 23 payment deadline, enrollment numbers should continue to rise – Tocco noted that enrollment is open to individuals who experience life changes such as marriage or divorce, and enrollment also is open year-round to those who are Medicaid-eligible.
Of the 35,428 total, 33,148 have paid their first month’s premium, according to HSRI. Tocco said the paid enrollment number could continue to rise as customers pay through the February payment deadline.

Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island continues to be the most popular carrier with 49 percent of enrollments, followed by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island with 47 percent and UnitedHealthcare of New England with 4 percent. Eighty-eight percent of those who enrolled are receiving some type of financial assistance.
Forty-nine percent of those who have enrolled are 45 and older, according to HSRI.
Small employers may enroll at their renewal date, regardless of where it falls during the year; to date, 2,236 small employer accounts have been created.
From Feb. 1 to Feb. 6, more than 16,000 calls were made to HSRI’ contact center, and the healthsourceri.com website received 30,853 page views.
