PROVIDENCE – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has announced $539,622 in funding to the Narragansett Indian Tribe of Rhode Island for affordable housing initiatives.
Each year, Indian Housing Block Grant allocations are distributed to eligible tribes, or their tribally-designated housing entities for affordable housing activities.
Nationwide, HUD announced more than $651 million to 636 Native American tribes in 34 states.
The funds primarily benefit low-income families living on Indian reservations or in other American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Grant amounts are based on a formula that considers local needs and housing units under management by the tribe or designated entity.
“Our nation is at its best when everyone has a fair chance to thrive,” HUD Secretary Julián Castro said in a statement. “These funds will support the innovative work Native American tribes and families are doing to build a more prosperous future. Our partnership with these local leaders today will create better housing opportunities, more robust economic development and stronger communities tomorrow.”
Funds can be used for housing development, assistance and management services, as well as crime prevention and safety, and activities that provide ways to solve affordable housing problems.
