PROVIDENCE – Elisabeth Harrison has been promoted to news director for Rhode Island Public Radio after serving in the interim role since early February.

RIPR, the NPR member station for Rhode Island, announced Harrison’s appointment in a news release on Tuesday. Her selection for the position follows a national search and interviews with candidates from major market stations, according to RIPR.

Harrison also hosted the Morning Edition for four years. Before becoming the Morning Edition host, she was the education reporter for RIPR, reporting on standardized testing, charter schools, the firing of teachers in Central Falls and more.

She has won two Edward R. Murrow Awards for her reporting on a transgender teenager who faced bullying in Pawtucket and for her reporting on homeless children in Newport. She also has won multiple AP Awards and two Metcalf Awards for her education coverage.

Before joining Rhode Island Public Radio in 2007, Harrison worked for CBS News and The Council on Foreign Relations in New York City.

“Elisabeth exhibits a remarkable work ethic and has shown that she can lead the RIPR newsroom. Her knowledge of the state coupled with her vision to increase reporting and diversity of voices on the air means more and better service to our community. We are thrilled to welcome her to her new position,” Susan Greenhalgh, RIPR interim general manager, said.

Harrison called it an “honor” to take on the new position.
“I have been incredibly lucky to work with the talented team of journalists that RIPR has assembled. Together, I look forward to building on the station’s tradition of excellent journalism focused on the issues that matter to our community,” Harrison said.
