PAWTUCKET – Harvest Kitchen, a food industry training program run by Farm Fresh Rhode Island, will move this year into new facilities in Pawtucket. The operation will occupy the ground level of 2 Bayley St., in what will become a renovated, mixed-use development that includes affordable apartments on upper floors.
The building is being renovated by Pawtucket Central Falls Development. The retail market and commercial kitchen to be leased and operated by Harvest Kitchen will include a café as well as takeout options, and will provide an outlet for fresh produce for residents of Pawtucket and nearby Central Falls.
The training program is directed at youths ages 16 to 20 who are involved with state juvenile corrections services, according to Farm Fresh RI spokeswoman Rebecca Seggel.
The trainees attend small group classes and work to create high-quality preserved foods, including ingredients from local farms, and then sell those products at farmers markets, according to Seggel.
Harvest Kitchen will move production to the Bayley Street commercial kitchen this summer, and expects to open the retail space in the fall. Farm Fresh RI is now conducting online fundraising to help equip the kitchen and retail space. More information can be found at www.crowdrise.com/Harvest-Kitchen.
