PAWTUCKET – Hasbro Inc. has earned a spot on CR Magazine’s “100 Best Corporate Citizens” list for the second consecutive year, this year moving into the top 10, at No. 7.

The iconic toy and game maker, which earned the No. 23 spot on the 2012 list, was recognized for its increasing transparency regarding its corporate-social-responsibility efforts. They include: product safety, environmental sustainability, manufacturing efforts and philanthropy.

In prepared remarks, Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s president and CEO, said his company was “proud” to be honored for the second consecutive year for leadership and advancements. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our employees around the world, and the strides we’re making in helping to build a safe and sustainable world for future generations,” said Goldner.

Joining Hasbro in the top 10 were: AT&T Inc. (No. 1), Mattel Inc. (No. 2), Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (No. 3), Eaton Corp. (No. 4), Intel Corp. (No. 5), Gap Inc. (No. 6), Merck & Co. Inc. (No. 8), Campbell Soup Co. (No. 9) and Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. (No. 10).

In a release announcing the recognition, Hasbro outlined the highlights of its recent CSR efforts, which include:

  • Reduced packaging: In 2012, Hasbro began to reduce the amount of material used in packaging products in its brand portfolio, building on its “ongoing sustainable packaging commitment.”

  • Phase-out of PVC in packaging: Hasbro has already phased out polyvinyl chloride from new-product packaging and plans to continue this reduction until it is no longer used.

  • Using Materials Responsibly: Hasbro’s owned and operated North American factory uses vegetable-based printing inks and aqueous coatings in its printing processes for game and puzzle components, boxes and instructions. The company added that this factory retains green certification for its printing processes by the nonprofit Sustainable Green Printing Partnership.

  • Product safety: Hasbro products continue to meet or exceed federal and international safety standards and the company said it has not experienced a product recall “in recent years.”

  • Philanthropy: In 2012, more than 3 million children were impacted by Hasbro’s philanthropic programs worldwide, according to the company, which added that Hasbro employees volunteered more than 20,000 hours during the year.

“This recognition builds on the leadership distinction Hasbro has received from several prestigious organizations over recent years,” said the Hasbro release. The company was recognized in March as one of the “2013 World’s Most Ethical Companies” by global business-ethics think tank the Ethisphere Institute.
