PAWTUCKET – Hasbro Inc. today announced new environmental sustainability goals, which include minimizing waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and conserving energy and water at its facilities.

The Pawtucket-based toy company hopes to achieve these goals by 2020.

“Hasbro has long been committed to playing responsibly and driving continual improvement in all facets of its business, including reducing the company’s use of natural resources,” said Brian Goldner, president and CEO of Hasbro. “We are proud of our sustainability progress, and our new 2020 goals help to keep our global workforce aligned and engaged on this important issue.”

By the end of 2020, Hasbro aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill from its facilities to 50 percent of its 2012 levels. Between 2008 and 2012, Hasbro cut waste by 40 percent, exceeding its goal of a 15 percent reduction.

Hasbro also hopes to reduce its global greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent between 2012 and 2020. In 2012, Hasbro reported that it had cut emissions by 32 percent over its 2008 baseline, surpassing its goal of 10 percent.

Additionally, Hasbro has set goals to quarter its energy consumption and reduce water consumption by 15 percent before the end of 2020.

While working toward these goals, Hasbro will continue to reduce the environmental impact of its global operations through sustainable packaging initiatives, which include reducing packaging material, eliminating PVC from packaging, increasing recycled content and sourcing paper responsibly.

In recognition of Hasbro’s environmental sustainability achievements, the company was recently awarded an Environmental Merit Award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
