Hasbro Children’s Hospital doctor honored

PROVIDENCE – Dr. Carol Lewis, pediatrician and director of the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Refugee Health Clinic, was awarded a Covering Kids Award by Rhode Island Kids County.
The award was presented at the 11th annual Celebration of Children’s Health sponsored by the statewide policy organization for Rhode Island’s children.
Lewis was one of the founders of the hospital’s Refugee Health Clinic, which serves the health needs of refugee children who arrive in Rhode Island from countries worldwide.
The clinic officially opened in 2007 to standardize and streamline the initial health exam and follow-up care of refugee children arriving in Rhode Island. The clinic is a medical home for refugee families, and a place where they can receive care that is comprehensive, collaborative and cost-effective.
The clinic has served the health needs of refugees from numerous countries, including Liberia, Burundi, Eritrea, Iraq, Somalia and Nepal.
“The impact of the work that Dr. Lewis has done on behalf of the hundreds of refugees who arrive in our state every year is immeasurable,” said Dr. Robert Klein, pediatrician-in-chief at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “She provides unfailingly compassionate and comprehensive care for people who need her at their most vulnerable time.”
