PAWTUCKET – Will the Scottie dog, cat, top hat, car, thimble, boot, wheelbarrow and battleship remain in Monopoly? Or will they be replaced by things like a bow tie, T-Rex, sliced bread, bathtub, sunglasses and hashtag?

Hasbro Inc. on Tuesday announced the Monopoly Token Madness Vote, which leaves the future of the current eight game tokens in the hands of fans, who can visit VoteMonopoly.com to choose eight tokens they would like to see in a new version of the classic game. Voting continues through Jan. 31.

There are more than 50 potential tokens to choose from, ranging from the new – a cell phone, computer and emojis, to the old – a grammaphone, typewriter and rotary phone.
Hasbro will reveal the results of the vote on World Monopoly Day, March 19.

“The Monopoly Token Madness Vote lets our passionate fans choose all eight tokens in the Monopoly game and no token – not even the Scottie dog – is safe!” Jonathan Berkowitz, senior vice president of marketing for Hasbro Gaming, said in a statement. “Only time will tell if fans will decide to stay with the classics, keep a few favorites or pick an entirely new line up of tokens.”

Monopoly tokens will be updated in a new game hitting stores in August.

Hasbro said the Monopoly Token Madness Edition, which includes the current eight tokens, plus eight golden colored tokens included in the vote (penguin, television, racecar, Mr. Monopoly emoji, rubber duck, watch, wheel and bunny slipper), is available now for the approximate retail price of $19.99.

Tokens have been a key part of the game since it made its debut in 1935 with the car, thimble, boot, top hat and battleship among the originals. The Scottie dog and wheelbarrow were added in the early 1950s.

Four years ago, fans voted the cat token as the newest Monopoly game piece while the iron token was retired following low fan votes.
