Hasbro patient named CMN Champion

After overcoming severe asthma, Nick Friend, 14, of East Providence was recently named 2013 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Rhode Island Champion.
As a champion, Friend will serve as a yearlong fundraising and awareness ambassador for Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and for all of the Children’s Miracle Networks 170 member hospitals. He will spend the next year illustrating the impact Hasbro Children’s Hospital had on his life and why donated funds are critical for research, education and treatment.
In the fall, Friend and other state champions will meet with President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C., and take a trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando.
“Nick is an exceptional young man who has overcome tremendous challenges to manage his asthma and become an inspiration that other children experiencing the same struggles can learn from,” said Dr. Robert B. Klein, pediatrician-in-chief of Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “Asthma is a very serious condition that presents differently in everyone, particularly young people. We’re so proud of Nick and know he’ll do an amazing job representing our hospital and Rhode Island to underscore the importance of the charitable support needed for research and treatment.”
