NEW YORK – Nearly two decades after establishing Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, the Hassenfeld family is set to fund the creation of a pediatric care facility at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

In a story published in Saturday’s Journal, the family is expected to announce a $50 million gift to NYU for the purpose of building the facility. The Hassenfeld Pediatric Center, which will be located at First Avenue and 34th Street in Manhattan, will include 68 private rooms with showers and sleeping couches for parents, as well as playrooms and performance spaces.

Sylvia Hassenfeld, a trustee of Langone Medical Center, is quoted in the story, “We want it to be child and parent friendly because there are so many stresses at the time of illness.”

Hassenfeld’s son, Alan, former chairman and CEO of Hasbro Inc. and chairman of Hassenfeld Family Initiatives, told Providence Business News, “All the success that my family and Hasbro have enjoyed the world over is because of children and families. It is only fitting that we give back to those especially in this dark time we are facing. Children will be our future, and we must do all we can to make sure they grow up with the best of medical care.”

The facility is expected to open in 2017.
