Jack Hayes was recently named director of athletics at Brown University, where he will oversee 37 varsity teams and 17 club-level intercollegiate teams. The Providence native previously held the same position at Hofstra University, where he focused on raising athletic and academic achievement among student athletes. Hayes holds a B.A. from Providence College and a master’s degree in education with a concentration in sports management from the University of Connecticut.

PBN: After graduating from Providence College in 1989, you completed a sports-information internship at Brown. Twenty-two years later, what’s changed and how does it feel to be back?
HAYES: Athletic programs are constantly looking for ways in which to grow in order to meet the needs of student-athletes. So, returning after 22 years, there has been much growth at Brown in the area of facilities, highlighted by the recent opening of the Nelson Fitness Center. There have been numerous facility enhancements over the years and there are several ongoing facilities projects and enhancements currently taking place.

PBN: You have two decades of experience in university sports administration? How do those experiences apply to your new position at Brown?
HAYES: There are definitely advantages to having worked at several institutions. I’ve learned that there are a variety of ways in which to reward excellence, measure success and implement strategies.

PBN: We hear you’re interested in bringing NCAA championship events to the state, could you tell us a little about what you have in mind?
HAYES: My first interest is to have Brown advance to as many championship events as possible. NCAA tournament participation is a great reward for student-athletes and coaches, and provides the opportunity for our teams to compete against the best teams in the country. [Brown athletes] aspire to be leaders and achieve the highest levels of success. It is important that we provide them with the resources that enable them to [do that]. That being said, I do believe … Brown should make every effort to host NCAA championship events and attract people to our great university and our great state. We are excited about teaming with the Dunkin’ Donuts Center to host the 2013 NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey East Regional in March. &#8226
