HealthSource RI: Enrollments near 35K

PROVIDENCE – Nearly 35,000 individuals have signed up for health insurance coverage through HealthSource RI as of Jan. 2.

The state’s health insurance exchange said enrollment totals 34,627, which is 731 more than the previous week. Nearly all of the individuals were auto-renewed into a 2016 plan, HSRI said.

A total of 4,462 of the 34,627 individuals are new to the exchange this year, or are returning after being enrolled at some point during another year.

In addition, 27,124 of the 34,627 individuals already have paid their first month’s insurance premium.

Open enrollment began Nov. 1 and continues through Jan. 31.

Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island is the most popular plan with 51 percent of enrollments, followed by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island with 45 percent and UnitedHealthcare of New England with 4 percent.

HealthSource RI received 99,055 phone calls from Nov. 1 through Jan. 2 and had 197,137 visits to its website at healthsourceri.com during that same period.
Small employers may enroll in insurance coverage at their renewal date, regardless of where it falls in the calendar year. Medicaid-eligible individuals also may enroll throughout the year, according to the exchange.
