PROVIDENCE – HealthSource RI said 30,680 individuals have enrolled in health insurance coverage for 2016 as of Nov. 7 – the first week of open enrollment.
Open enrollment continues through Jan. 31.
HealthSource RI, in a news release, said that number represents those who already paid for premiums and those who have not paid, and that nearly all of the individuals are current enrollees who have been auto-renewed into a 2016 plan.
A total of 306 individuals have picked a plan for 2016 coverage that is new to HSRI this year or are returning after being enrolled with HSRI during a previous period.
So far, 54 percent of those who enrolled are women, and 46 percent are men. Those 55 and older represent the largest enrollment group at 29 percent, while those 45 to 54 are the next-largest group at 22 percent. Eighty-five percent of those who enrolled are receiving some type of financial assistance, with 15 percent not receiving any type of subsidy.
Neighborhood Health Plan is the most popular carrier so far with 53 percent of enrollments, followed by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island at 43 percent and UnitedHealthCare of New England at 4 percent.
HealthSource RI spokeswoman Maria Tocco said the average premium increase for individuals and families is 4.1 percent.
In addition, during open enrollment from Nov. 1 to 7, 11,727 phone calls were received by HSRI while healthsourceri.com received 42,836 page views.
While there is a specific enrollment period for individuals, Medicaid-eligible individuals may enroll throughout the year, HSRI said. Also, small employers may enroll at their renewal date, regardless of where it falls during a calendar year. The average premium increase for small employers is 3.5 percent, Tocco said.
