Healthtrax takes steps against obesity

WARWICK – The Healthtrax Fitness & Wellness Center is holding a used shoe drive to help curb adolescent obesity.
The center aims to help keep used shoes out of landfills by collaborating with ReRun Shoes to give people another way to dispose of them. Boxes used to collect the shoes are located at Healthtrax at 2191 Post Road. Those who drop off shoes can stay for a workout as a guest.
“When spring cleaning, remember to bring your gently worn sneakers, cleats and shoes to Healthtrax,” said Chuck Henley, vice president of operations at Healthtrax.
Rerun shoes takes donations to a Holyoke, Mass., warehouse where adults with developmental disabilities prepare the shoes for export to small entrepreneurs in Africa. There, the shoes are cleaned and sold.
In April, the shoe drive is supporting research into curbing adolescent obesity. For every pair of running shoes/sneakers received, Rerun Shoes is donating 50 cents to this cause at the Friedman School of Nutrition at Tufts University.
Healthtrax has fitness centers in 18 locations in eight states. For more information, visit www.healthtrax.com. For more information about Rerun shoes visit www.rerunshoes.com.
