Heaton & Cowing renovation begins

PROVIDENCE – A renovation has begun of the former Heaton & Cowing Mill into affordable apartments for veterans. The project was among the first awarded state historic preservation tax credits under a new infusion of funds in 2013.
The three-story mill building, at 1115 Douglas Ave., will be converted to 20 apartments for homeless and disabled veterans. The apartments will primarily be one-bedroom in size, with one efficiency. The project called “Veterans for Tomorrow” is a joint effort of the Blackstone Valley Development Corp. and Veterans for Tomorrow LLC.
It is expected to be completed in October.
Saccoccio & Associates of Cranston is the architect and interior designer. Surveying, site engineering and permitting was handled by DiPrete Engineering of Providence.
The apartments will retain the historical feel of the former jewelry manufacturing site, but also will provide comfortable living space with modern amenities, according to Mark Saccoccio, principal of Saccoccio & Associates.
The apartments will be handicap accessible and the building will include space for job training and other services for veterans.
