SMITHFIELD – German medical device maker Heidelberg Engineering has moved its technical services division to a new custom-built research and development facility off of Harris Road, the company has announced.

The move will nearly double the size of Heidelberg’s previous technical services facility and is the result of four years of double=digit sales growth of its Spectralis diagnostic ophthalmology equipment, the company said in an announcement.

The square footage of the new facility and the number of employees that will be working there were not disclosed.

“The strong continued growth of the company speaks volumes during one of the biggest economic downturns in our nation’s history,” said Travis Lindsay, Heidelberg general manager and chief operating officer in a news release.
