When elderly residents need a ride to appointments and family members aren’t available, where do they turn?

A new business, based in East Providence, hopes to become one answer.

Bookseniorcare, located online at www.bookseniorcare.com, is a service platform that will connect consumers with contractors willing to provide fee-based rides to appointments or perform various tasks, such as pet sitting or home cleaning.

The idea is more Airbnb than Uber. People interested in hiring a helper or a driver will peruse their online profiles, select who they prefer and pay them directly through an online payment service, according to co-owners Chris McGee and Matt White.

The contractors will be vetted by Bookseniorcare before they can post their services, according to McGee and White. They plan to screen the contractors for criminal convictions and driving records, among other things. In-person interviews will also be required. The contractors must post their services using full names, too.

“We want people to feel comfortable,” said White. •
