Hemingway first edition among auction items

PROVIDENCE – A first edition of Ernest Hemingway’s “To Have and Have Not” in its original dust jacket could be a big draw at the Adopt A Doctor’s fifth annual Art Auction on Dec. 20 at MetroCafe on Dyer Street.
The book, published in 1937, was donated for the auction by M&S Rare Books, which was founded in 1969 in Wayland Square.
Adopt A Doctor is a Providence-based international nonprofit that works to address the high turnover rate and alarming scarcity of medical doctors in Africa. Doctors who join Adopt A Doctor’s program commit to practicing medicine in Africa for at least seven years in return for salary supplementation. The organization reports that several participating physicians have exceeded the time commitment.
All proceeds raised at the auction will go to help pay salaries of 18 medical doctors in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali and Malawi.
The auction will be held from 5-7 p.m. and also feature paintings and other artwork as well as goods and services up for bid.
