PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission has awarded $59,300 to seven municipalities and historic-preservation programs across the state.

The grants, funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Park Service, are awarded and administered under the Heritage Commission’s Certified Local Government program, which provides grants and technical assistance to cities and towns whose historic-district ordinances meet the commission’s standards.

Seventeen Rhode Island cities and towns are currently Certified Local Governments.

“The work carried out by municipal historical- preservation programs is very important to our statewide preservation efforts,” said Heritage Commission Executive Director Edward F. Sanderson. “These grant awards are an acknowledgement of the commitment which these communities have made to protect their historic resources.”
