Historical Society hosting Docent Symposium

Posted 5/10/13

BRISTOL – The sixth Rhode Island Docent Symposium, which will host 150 people from 33 institutions in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut on May 13, for a day of communication and collaboration has been sold out for weeks, according to the Rhode Island Historical Society.

The society planned and organized the event that will take place at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens, and Arboretum.

“There has been an enthusiastic response to the gathering,” Cathy Hurst, co-director of the symposium, said in a statement.

The event is designed to provide an opportunity for docents and guides to learn about trends and best practices from heritage and cultural tourism experts.

The opening session will give attendees the chance to share ideas from personal experience. Discussions will focus on the role of technology in tourism services, how important it is for a guide to have a good story, and how an historic site can meet the needs of a teacher and a core curriculum for class field trips.

The docent symposium receives financial support from the Rhode Island Foundation and the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities.
