Historical societies launch History Space

The Rhode Island Historical Society and the Newport Historical Society are jointly launching History Space, programming that provides hands-on workshops and seminars for practitioners of historic art forms.
The series of programs on early American culture is geared towards reenactors, living history enthusiasts, and those interested in interpretation for historic sites and houses, including members of the Rhode Island History Online Directory Initiative.
“History Space” workshops are designed to provide training on how to interpret early American material culture and Rhode Island’s unique place in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Also expected to be promoted are living history pursuits such as the August Stamp Act Protest reenactment in Newport and the Providence-based What Cheer Day in October.
The evolving schedule includes two hands-on men’s clothing workshops and a free talk, which introduce the world of reenacting and the related tools necessary to build a period-correct impression.
The programs include: “Easy Grace and Comfort: Men’s Frock Coat Workshop,” Jan. 17 and 24; “To Turn a Good Leg: Men’s Breeches Workshop,” Feb. 21 and 22; and “Fitting into the Past,” a free lecture on Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. at Colony House, Washington Square, Newport.
The workshops carry fees and require early registration. For more information, visit http://NewportHistory.Eventbrite.com.
