NEWPORT – The 15-bedroom “Cliff Walk” mansion known as “Hopedene” has sold for $16 million, the highest purchase price of a Rhode Island home this year and second highest ever, Gustave White Sotheby’s International Real Estate announced Wednesday.

The 6-acre estate at 43 Cliff Ave. was sold by Craig and Michelle Millard to a buyer who wished to be known only as Hopedene LLC, according to a news release. The Millards had performed an extensive renovation of the property.

A Georgian revival designed by Peabody & Stearns and built between 1899 and 1902, the 12.5-bathroom mansion comes with a large carriage house, balustrade-bordered terraces, tennis court, ocean-facing pool, gated service entrance and Federal Aviation Administration-approved heliport.

The seller’s agent was David Huberman, sales associate with Gustave White Sotheby’s and the buyer was represented by Paul Leys, broker-owner of Gustave White Sotheby’s.

The asking price for Hopedene was $18 million.
