Hotel tax collections climb in December, FY to date

PROVIDENCE – State hotel tax collections increased 9.3 percent in December compared with December 2013, and climbed 8.1 percent for the first six months of the fiscal year, according to information released Wednesday by the R.I.Department of Revenue.
The state 5 percent hotel tax is collected on the rental of rooms in the state and distributed based on a formula outlined in R.I. General Laws.
In December, $747,514 was collected, representing a 9.3 percent increase over the $684,001 collected in December 2013.
Of that amount, regional tourism districts received the largest share at $290,293, reflecting a 7.2 percent increase year over year, followed by municipalities at $172,550, a 7.1 percent increase, and the state, $160,417, a 9.9 percent increase.
The Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau received $107,060, a 13.6 percent increase over the year, and the R.I. Convention Center Authority received $17,194, a 44.2 percent hike over the previous year’s share.
On a fiscal year basis, hotel tax collections grew 8.1 percent to $10.5 million, with regional tourism districts receiving the largest share at $4.4 million, an 8.2 percent increase, municipalities, $2.5 million, an 8.4 percent increase, and the state, $2.2 million, an 8.1 percent increase.
The Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau received $1.2 million, an 8.1 percent increase over the year, and the R.I. Convention Center Authority received $161,316, a 3.5 percent increase.
“Fiscal year-to-date state hotel tax collections through December 2014 continue to grow at steady rate eclipsing the fiscal year-to-date growth in state hotel tax collections of 5.7 percent recorded last year at this time,” state Director of Revenue Rosemary Booth Gallogly said.
